Lenten Series: Mar 23 & 24

"Grimaldi says, every conscience has an off switch somewhere." (Cloud Atlas: A Novel, David Mitchell)

Conscience = God's will that He planted in our hearts. It's our natural inclination. Switching it off means going against our nature. Thus, it takes a lot more effort. In the same way that it takes a lot more muscles to frown or scowl vs. to smile --- because our natural tendency is to smile. Check yourself. Does it not feel immensely liberating to smile? It's the same with following your conscience. Going against our conscience takes a lot of effort, as well as, eats us up inside.
These days, though, it's become a trend to switch off our conscience whenever it suits our selfish interests or cowardice. We think we are practicing our freedom. In truth, we have allowed ourselves to become slaves to our selfishness; or allowed ourselves to be pushed over.
Let us have the courage to trust in God's will and His capacity to see us through whatever situation He brings us to.

From March 23's 1st Reading - Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62:
"They suppressed their consciences; they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven, and did not keep in mind just judgments ...

Through tears she looked up to heaven, for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly."

From March 24's Gospel - John 8:21-30
"The one who sent me is with me. he has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to Him."
